A “superflare” fired by the Sun throw out energy equal to a billion nuclear bombs if it is directed towards the Earth, it can wipe out everything clean on the Earth’s surface.
However, Earth also has a secret weapon… its magnetic fields which wards of such powerful solar storms.
But now scientists have warned that such a superflare can completely destroy Earth’s communications and energy systems.
The warning has been made after astronomers saw a superflare on a star with alarmingly similar characteristics to ordinary solar flares.
Researchers reported that the Sun can produce solar flares 1,000 times more powerful than any flare previously recorded.
Solar flares are actually magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere and released in a single burst, producing immense radiation.
Lead scientist Chloe Pugh explained, “If the Sun were to produce a superflare it would be disastrous for life on Earth; our GPS and radio communication systems could be severely disrupted and there could be large-scale power blackouts as a result of strong electrical currents being induced in power grids.”
The research proves that Sun can produce superflares, but, fortunately, the chances of that happening are very slim.
